Nobody can bring home the stark realities of the Vietnam war like Bob George. For those who have been there, his paintings get the adrenelin pumping. Bob, I salute you for being the finest Vietnam artist there is.....Dave

Bob George replied:

Dave , sorry I took so long to thank you for your gracious comments on my artwork - major computer crash and burn. Many thanks brother. Bob

Your comments are always appreciated. I strive for realism without using a photo-realistic technique. As you know, nothing out in the bush is really in super focus. Best we saw was shape and movement and reacted only at "that particular moment" when all hell broke loose...! Bob

Bob there isn`t a brother of the `Nam anywhere who wouldn`t be able to relate to your artwork. Just viewing one of your paintings takes one back to the days spent in the bush......they are unbelivably realistic......best of the best.....Dave

Thanks Bob for the clarification, I carried the M14AR with bi-pod and a star scope.Very effective weapon at 1000 yds. As far as I know the BAR was replaced by both automatic weapons, But I was only a draftee ?? And the only time I carried a 45 along with my weapon was on paymaster guard detail.

Good work, when I first sat this in a small pic, thought the weapon was a BAR, carried one for three tours in Korea with the 5th. This is what we have been calling Photo Realistic painting.

Bob George replied:

Nadine and Bob, Thanks for the compliments! Bob, I could be wrong about this, but I think the M60 replaced the BAR in the squad. I only saw the BAR during basic in '58. I salute you for your duty. 3 tours had to be rough.

Your comments are much appreciated. I went over in '65 with the Big Red One. At that time many of us still wore our leathers and were later issued jungle boots and fatigues. The OD chevrons were phasing in during '66. When I went back in '68 it wasn't unusual to still see the leather boots being worn. The 60 is fed from the left by a disintigrating split-link belt. Look a little closer on the ground and you'll see some of the expended links. Grenadiers, Medics and M-60 gunners were authorized 45's. Some chose to carry them, some didn't.

Terrific painting Bob, congrats. This must have been interim Nam, as the grunts have regular stripes instead of OD, leather boots instead of canvas, but carry M16's. Also great M60, but needs the 7.62ammo feed belt, and Spec4's were not issued sidearms, except special duty. Just an old Vet, whose a stickler on detail like unit patches.

...and time well spent! "Shoe Shine Boy" - "Out of Reach" - 'Nostalgia" - "Burdens of Devotion" - 'Auspicious Ovum" - "Her Own Choosing" and "Isolation" are exceptional paintings. I single these out not to diminish the other paintings but to draw attention to all of them. They are the heart and soul of a truly wonderful talent.

About Bob George

Bob George

Fine Arts studies and a Vietnam Combat Artist assignment backs up my long career as an illustrator, designer and art director in the Washington, D.C. area. Over the years, my artwork has been displayed at the White House, Pentagon, U.S. Park Service and the National Air & Space Museum. Now semi-retired from the commercial scene, I take great pleasure in creating art of my own choosing without any agency demands. Favorite subjects now include scenes of Key West, Florida, rural Tennessee and my personal images of Vietnam. 1st Place winner in the first annual Johnson City Veterans art show 2013 "The Creative Warrior." 2010 "Great Smoky Mountains "Wildflower Artist Of The Year."
